Thistle Control

5/26/2026

Picture
A wide variety of thistles can be seen everywhere this summer and appear to be in abundant supply. Musk, purple, bull and spiny thistles are all eyesores but they also hinder grazing, compete for available moisture and will continue to multiply if left alone.

Thistles are found primarily in pastures, hay meadows, roadsides and waste areas. Musk thistle generally is not a problem in cultivated cropland, but may germinate and develop in fallow fields or after wheat is planted in the fall.

Thistles can be either annuals or biennials, but most are biennials. These germinate and grow into the rosette stage in the first year. They remain in the rosette stage over the winter and then bloom and produce seeds the next growing season.

MUSK THISTLE

Musk thistles reduce forage production and use. Cattle will not graze forage plants in heavy infestation of this thistle. Dense infestations of musk thistle compete strongly with grass or other desirable plants for water, light and nutrients.

Research indicates that one plant per square foot nearly decreases forage production in half. This results in lower income from grazing areas. Loss in income also results from lower quality hay due to contamination by this noxious weed.

Musk thistles usually start flowering in spring and can bloom from seven to nine weeks. Musk thistle flower heads are “powder puff” in shape, in contrast to “saving brush” flower heads of some other thistles. The colorful flowers are usually deep rose to violet or purple. The leaves are coarsely lobed and dark green with a light green midrib. Leaves have an alternate arrangement on the stem and are smooth and hairless on both sides.

A musk thistle plant may produce from one to over 100 heads depending on soil and growing conditions. University of Arkansas research shows, 80 percent of seeds from a thistle are deposited within 55 yards of the original plant. A single plant can produce up to 10,000 good quality seeds.

THISTLE CONTROL

Mechanical methods include mowing and hand cutting. Mowing needs to be done with a rotary mower before the first appearance of pink on the flowers. Mowing at full bloom will prevent seed production.

Producers should mow cleanly and closely and repeat as needed for control and cutting should take place between the first appearance of pink and the first appearance of brown on the pappus of the earliest head. You can also dig the root at least two inches below ground level and remove all soil from the roots. If you pick heads that are beyond the bud stage, you should burn them in a controlled fashion.

Spraying is an effective way to control thistle outbreaks. Musk thistle plants with flower stalks are more difficult to kill than the rosettes. Rosettes need to be treated when they are actively growing and not under drought stress. This probably means in the fall (late October) or spring (mid April). The younger the rosette, the more susceptible it is to the herbicide.

You can use 2,4-D but you will get better thistle control by using a combination of 2,4-D and dicamba (Banvel). Other herbicides labeled for controlling musk thistles in pastures include Grazon Next HL, Grazon P+D, Chapparal, Surmount and Cimarron Max. Always be sure to read and follow label instructions, and treat at the proper time.

Another control is biological. Specific natural enemies of musk thistle can aid in regulating the spread of this weed. Such natural enemies include the musk thistle rosette weevil, the musk thistle flower head weevil and a musk thistle rust fungus.

The larvae of the rosette weevil feed on the underside of the leaves of the rosette and on the leaves and stems of bolted plants; larvae of the flower head weevil feed in the base of the developing flower of the thistle. The two weevils are compatible with each other as biological control agents because they do not compete with each.

Newton County Outlines Rehabilitation Plan for Historic Redings Mill Bridge
NEWTON COUNTY, MO
 — Following the temporary closure of the historic Redings Mill pedestrian bridge over Shoal Creek, Newton County officials have released an approved plan to repair water damage and preserve the 1930s-era structure.
Due to deteriorating conditions between the aging asphalt surface and the concrete deck, the County is undertaking a targeted rehabilitation project.

  • Asphalt Removal: Specialized milling to remove the remaining asphalt surface from the deck.
  • Concrete Repair: Following the removal, crews will perform full-depth concrete replacement on deteriorated sections of the deck, including the installation of new rebar reinforcement to ensure structural integrity.
  • Preventative Sealing: To prevent future water infiltration and protect the structural concrete, a protective coating or concrete sealer will be applied to the finished deck.
While the bridge is structurally sound, this preventative maintenance is necessary to prevent further deterioration and ensure the safety of pedestrians. The goal is to reopen this popular community gathering spot as soon as possible after repairs are completed.

Sincerely,
NEWTON COUNTY COMMISSION

PRESS RELEASE

4/3/2026

Newton County Voters to Decide Homestead Real Estate Tax Credit Question on April 7, 2026 Ballot

Newton County, Missouri – Newton County voters will soon decide whether to approve a Homestead Real Estate Tax Credit authorized by Senate Bill 3 (2025) and codified in 137.1055, RSMo. The measure, if approved, would limit the
amount property taxes can increase on eligible primary residences (homesteads) while protecting local services and ensuring the credit applies only where intended.

The ballot question, which will appear on the April 7, 2026 General Municipal Election ballot, reads:
“Shall the County of  exempt eligible taxpayers from certain tax increases on eligible taxpayers’ primary residence above the liability incurred during the initial credit year?”
□ YES
□ NO
A YES vote would authorize the credit, while a NO vote would not authorize the credit. Under the program, the real property tax liability on an eligible taxpayer’s homestead would not increase more than the greater of five percent (5%) per year or the percent increase in the Consumer Price Index above the amount paid in the “initial credit year”. The credit applies only to a taxpayer’s primary residence—the home they actually live in. It does not apply to rental properties, agricultural land, commercial property, personal property, or second homes.  If approved, the County anticipates the tax credit would be implemented no later than tax year 2027.
The credit will:
  • Apply only to a taxpayer’s primary residence
  • Provide an annual credit equal to the difference between the current year’s tax liability and the initial credit year amount (subject to the 5% or CPI cap and certain limitations).
  • Require an application so only eligible taxpayers receive the benefit on their primary residence.
  • Allow taxpayers to continue receiving a tax bill that clearly reflects any credit.
The credit will not:
  • Eliminate property taxes or freeze them permanently.
  • Apply to new construction, improvements, or added value on the property.
  • Cover increases from new voter-approved levies, voter-approved increases in existing levies, annexation into new taxing jurisdictions, the State Blind Pension Fund, or bonded indebtedness.
  • Benefit non-residential or non-homestead properties.
  • Automatically enroll anyone -- participation is voluntary and requires an approved application each year.
If approved, the credit could reduce revenue for school districts, cities, fire districts, ambulance districts, the county, and other taxing entities that rely on property taxes. Those districts may need to adjust budgets to maintain services.
Voters should be aware that there are ongoing lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of SB 3 which may affect the validity, implementation or applicability of the Homestead Tax Credit statement – regardless of whether voters approve the ballot question.  If the courts find the relevant provisions unconstitutional, the credit may not take effect or may take effect and later be declared unlawful.  If the courts uphold SB 3, then the vote on the ballot question will determine whether the Homestead Tax Credit will apply in the county.
The program is separate from the existing Senior Property Tax Credit under SB 190. Eligible seniors may qualify for both programs, but they will not receive a tax credit under both programs.
For questions, contact the County at the following telephone number: 417-451-8223.
